March 1, 2020 — The Coastal GasLink Project
All 20 of the First Nations along the approved Coastal GasLink route have signed agreements to move forward with this project.
We engaged our communities through this process to ensure this is what our people want. The opportunity to become independent and bring education, work and prosperity to our communities is at the heart of this agreement.
We appreciate the respect and opportunity Coastal GasLink has afforded to us throughout this process.
As Elected Leaders, we continue to work with Coastal GasLink to ensure they are respecting our people, our land, and our culture as we move forward with this project.
March 1, 2020 — What’s Happening?
The Wet’suwet’en communities were not invited to participate in the discussions leading up to an agreement with the Federal and Provincial governments on our Aboriginal Rights and Title.
All clan members have a voice that must be heard, and they must be included in the process of ratifying any agreement with government officials.
To ensure we address this agreement collectively, all Wet’suwet’en people need to be engaged and have the opportunity to collaborate.
Once we have all had the opportunity to review the proposed agreement, we will work with the Hereditary Chiefs to ensure all members’ concerns are addressed before it moves forward.
We recognize and respect the role of the Hereditary Chiefs in our respective communities and we choose to work alongside them and move forward together.
